My first piece of advice came from a local photographer I sought out after realizing my love for the craft. Each evening around dusk, just as the sun grew long and illuminated The Alley with an orange glow, he would open the doors of his downtown gallery. I always saw him working behind his desk or talking to one of his many visitors but this night he was alone and lighting a candle.

I entered.

He was a soft spoken white haired man with purpose in his eyes and age in his words. He toured me around the images of his wife, daughter and granddaughter as I shared my newly acquired addiction. He was the closest thing to a hero I had come across providing me a compass but no map.

"You can say no."
